Days and Hours of Operation
The center is open year-round from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The center is closed on all CU designated holidays. Additionally, there are closure days before the start of each semester for staff training.
While a full-time schedule is offered, a morning part-time schedule is also available from 7:30 to 12:30. We ask for a two-day minimum, although three, four, and five days per week are other scheduling options. Afternoon part-time and drop-in care are not available. We encourage you to bring your child to school in the morning to insure a smoother day. Usually before 10:00 is ideal although some classrooms prefer earlier times. Dropping off or picking up at naptime is disruptive and therefore discouraged. Please communicate any scheduling differences with teachers.
The goal of the children’s center is to help develop self-discipline, encouraging adaptation to acceptable standards of behavior from inner motivation rather than from external controls. Discipline emphasizes limits and rules that are understandable and consistent.
Teachers are expected to try to prevent problems before they arise by arranging programs and classrooms that meet the developmental needs of the children. Examples include having a wide selection of toys, arranging classrooms so that children can be as independent as possible, offering a daily schedule that balances the need for physical activity and rest, and allowing children the choice of challenging activities suited to their developmental level.
Discipline is caring control. When correction is necessary, teachers will use a kind, firm voice to redirect or restate the rule. No physical or harsh verbal discipline of children is allowed. The tone of our school environment is respect. Teachers model and encourage respect for each other, the children, and the environment. We do not allow children to hurt others, themselves, or to damage the classroom materials. Children whose behavior endangers others are supervised away from the situation until they are ready to rejoin the group in a more socially acceptable manner. Teachers facilitate the development of responsibility, self-regulation, and self-control in children.
- Delinquent payments – Parents who have been delinquent in payments three times in an academic year may lose their child’s place at the FHCC.
- Failure to provide or renew your child’s medical statement and immunization record can be cause for dismissal. Both forms are required for our State license.
- Lack of cooperation with the center’s efforts to resolve differences or to address behavioral issues disruptive to normal class functioning.
- Abusive behavior and/or verbal threats toward children, staff or other parents. All reasons for dismissal are at the discretion of the director.
Eligibility for Participation
The CU Children’s Center is open to children of CU graduate and family housing residents, students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The following individuals are also included:
- International visitors assigned to a CU department or faculty member are considered to be faculty, provided a letter from the department chair is furnished requesting this accommodation.
A current identification number, student Buff OneCard and/or employee identification number must be provided at the time of enrollment for status verification.
The items below are required PRIOR to your child’s first day at the center.
Completed enrollment packet, which includes the following:
- Nonrefundable registration fee of $100.00
- Three (3) one-hour parent-child visits in the prospective classroom.
- An enrollment meeting is suggested before attending.
We welcome families from all ethnic, racial, religious, and national backgrounds. We do not discriminate based on background, race, creed, or gender. Parents and children can expect to be treated fairly and equally. Children with special needs are welcome at the center. We are committed to doing our best to meet each child’s individual needs.
Parents must clear extra days in advance with both the office and their child’s teachers. Extra days may only be added on a space-available basis and will be billed accordingly. Our billing policies do not allow you to use an extra day in place of a missed scheduled day. Please be considerate of times that are busier for us and plan your care needs ahead of time. It is really difficult for us to accommodate extra day requests when we are planning for a semester change and having children visit new classrooms.
Notice of Withdrawal
The center requires a 30-day written notice of your intent to withdraw your child from the center. If we do not receive this notice, tuition will be automatically charged.
Notification of Changes
Parents are expected to notify the center immediately and in writing of any changes in name, address, employment location and/or phone numbers so they can be contacted in the event of an emergency. In the event your child’s physician changes, this information must also be provided to the center as soon as possible.
For the consistency of our classrooms, we are counting on you to commit to your schedule for the semester. You will have an opportunity to change your child’s schedule each semester. You must give a 30-day notice if you wish to drop any attending days. Days may be added to your child’s schedule on a space-available basis.
The center accepts all children that may benefit from the group experiences provided here. The center reserves the right to determine whether or not any particular child will benefit from the program and whether the program can be adapted to meet a child’s needs. Enrolled children who are identified as having special needs may be referred to university or community services. The children’s center assumes no responsibility for the costs associated with these referrals.
In situations where your child will be absent for thirty (30) days or more, a temporary leave can be requested to maintain your child’s space at the center. This period will be charged at a 50 percent rate of your current tuition. This temporary leave may stay in effect for a period of up to three (3) months before a formal withdrawal will be requested. No discounts can be given for vacations less than 30 days.

Tuition rates, payment schedules and other fees are detailed in Appendix (1).
All visitors must sign in and out. The sign-in sheet is located by the front door. Visitors must list name, address, time of visit, purpose of visit, and present identification to center staff.
